About That 'Gun Control' Thing

FB Friend Don Cooper posted this succinct and factual piece. If you are 'pro gun', his logical deliniation may come in handy. If you are of the 'anti-gun' group, you might want to read and consider this with as open a mind as you can muster.

Even good people get emotional and do irrational things sometimes. Irrationality is a part of our humanity, there's nothing we can do about it.

Some believe that's why guns should not be readily available to people.

At first this seems reasonable but after closer examination the even more dangerous consequences become apparent.

The first problem is that any laws restricting gun ownership will be enforced by law enforcers with guns. People just as vulnerable to emotional, irrational acts. Who's going to police the police? We see horrendous acts of violence every day by the king's men on unarmed people.

Secondly, history has shown us that the path to tyranny is paved with an imbalance of weapons. First the state disarms the public under the guise of public safety and then usurps ultimate power and control over the populous.

Thirdly, is the irrational nature of laws meant to deal with human irrationality. Gun laws are prior restraint laws. Laws meant to assume someone will do something bad so they will be restrained prior in order to insure they don't do something bad. It's pre-crime like in the movie "Minority Report". It's also prejudicial and dehumanizing. The individual is taken out of the equation and everyone is treated with the same contempt and suspicion without probable cause.

Lastly is the destructive economic effects. Guns, like all weapons, are an economic good that are produced for many different uses: hunting, sport, fun, self-defense etc. Guns, ammunition and many other accessories create jobs and stimulate economic activity. There are 200 million gun owners in the US alone. The gun industry is a billion dollar a year business. Any laws restricting the manufacture and sale will necessarily negatively impact a large sector of the economy.

The UK has all but made it impossible for people to get guns yet they still have one of the EU's highest violent crime rates. People just use knives instead of guns. Now the government is asking people to turn in their knives!

What's next? Cricket bats? I know, let's just all stay at home every day unless we have an "exit license" from the state to go outside. That will certainly minimize the fear of something bad happening.
